FVC, or forced (expiratory) vital capacity, is the ratio of air expelled from the lungs in a single breath. It is a component of the forced expiratory volume (FEV) method, which gauges breaths in timed sequences between 1-and-3 seconds to note any changes in their rhythm. A spirometry test is a tool that uses the FVC variable to assess the elasticity of the lung tissue.

During a spirometry test, a lab technician instructs the test subject to take a deep breath and exhale forcibly between cycles to gain more accurate feedback.
